Juarez killings

July 14, 2018

A loyal reader tipped us off to the fact that 22 people were killed in a 24 hour period in Juarez just a couple of weeks ago.

El Paso suffers from the perception that the violence might spill over to the United States side.

Certainly the violence does not make it easy to recruit new businesses.

Consistently losing

July 13, 2018

The May 2014 third quarter operating report for Sun Metro showed that they reported 12,471,000 riders so for that year.  They computed each ride as costing $2.73 and told us that they were recovering 30.34% from the fare box.

This year’s May 2018 third quarter operating report has them reporting 9,928,000 for the same period of time as the 2014 report.  Each ride cost $3.63 and they reported fare box recovery of 15.67%.

That means that they have had a 21% drop in ridership, a 33% increase in costs, and are recovering at half of their 2014 percentage.

It is time for them to consider new approaches.

What they are doing is failing and we are paying for it.

Extra capacity?

July 12, 2018

We have been told that the rationale for closing ten EPISD elementary schools is that they are not being used to capacity.

In the case of Rivera elementary we have been told that the school is operating at 51 percent of capacity.

Why then does Rivera have six portable classrooms?  Isn’t there enough room in the permanent classrooms for the children?  Or is it possible that the six portables have been used to add “capacity”?

According to the Times the other schools are Moye, Beall, Bonham, Rusk, Alta Vista, Hawkins, Johnson, and Roberts.

If any of our readers pass by these schools we would appreciate hearing from them as to how many portables (if any) the schools have.

Wait for the bill

July 9, 2018

Well, they’re doing it again.

It is time to start the budgeting process for the city’s next year.

Instead of holding their budget meetings in the regular city council meeting place they have chosen to have a series of meetings in a much smaller room.  They could have the meetings in their regular place but evidently holding them in the smaller room will help to keep the public out.

They will hold such meetings July 9, 10, 11 and 12.

There is no backup material posted with the agenda item so you will just have to wait until they send you a tax bill.

County hospital getting well?

July 7, 2018

Word on the street is that the new administrator at our county hospital is cutting unnecessary jobs and managing working schedules to match patient loads.

We’ve even heard that the children’s hospital may go into the black soon.

That seems strange but if the new bosses are fixing the unfair contracts it is conceivable.

This is better
