Educated or manipulated?

October 9, 2015

The Ysleta school district is conducting a $430 million  bond election after having lost a $450 million one just six months ago.

The loss was a narrow one so they are trying again.

This time they are employing a new tactic.  As it turns out there are about 1,000 school kids who are eligible to vote since they have turned 18.  The district has launched a campaign to get these kids to register to vote.

Our state senator has been active in the campaign.  He has not been active in any similar campaigns in our other school districts.  That pretty much tells me what his real motivations are.

I wonder if these civic minded school district employees have explained to the 18 year olds that it will be the younger voters who bear the brunt of the bond costs if they pass.  If the bonds are 20 year ones these kids will be paying into middle age.  I also have to wonder if anyone has explained to them that apartment dwellers pay the costs through their rent.

Hopefully some parents will explain the issue so that our new voters understand the facts.

Dead right

October 3, 2015

In the last few days I’ve witnessed a dangerous practice that I hope all will take warning of.

No less than five times I have approached or passed through a stop-light controlled traffic intersection and have seen a driver deliberately run a red light.  Traffic was always light.

All of the drivers were male and all were young.

Be careful!

Wondering why

September 22, 2015

Why is it that with all of the controversy surrounding the children’s hospital that we have not heard anything about the care that they have provided?

They evidently have a number of highly paid pediatric specialists.  What extraordinary cases have they cured that could not have been handled at traditional hospitals?  How busy are these specialists?

No pretentions

The folks over at Ysleta are at least honest about what they might do if the voters give them the bond money they want:

All dollar amounts are preliminary estimates and such estimates and the projects themselves are subject to change. Inclusion of a specific project in the Facilities Master Plan is the Board’s current intention to implement such project but actual use of any voter-approved bond funds will be determined by subsequent action of the Board of Trustees.

That statement comes directly from their web site.

Any questions?

Freshman Baloney

September 10, 2015

One of our new city representatives is now claiming that she did not know that she is required to make all emails and text messages that she sends or receives on her personal electronic accounts available to the city.

Why not?

Even those of us  that live under rocks know that the city has gone through a lengthy battle about this issue over the last few years.  One would think that someone who wants to be a city representative would have followed that battle and would know what the requirements are.

It is also hard to believe that new council members are not given training about what their powers and responsibilities are.
