Good news from YISD?

September 9, 2015

We get to report some good news today.

I am often disturbed when talking with youngsters to learn that they never took the scholastic aptitude test (SAT) or the ACT while in high school.  Many universities require the test.  Some of these kids don’t think that they will be going to college and skip the test.  Later some of them decide that they do want to go to college and have to take one of the tests.  Most of them would have been better off to take the test while still in high school.

The August 12, 2015 Ysleta Independent School District board of trustees meeting agenda includes two items that pay for every student to take tests, thus removing cost from the decision as to whether to take the test or not.

Agenda item 11 was to authorize a contract that would pay for each 11th grader to take the ACT test.

Item 12 considers paying for the Preliminary SAT for each 10th and 11th grader.

I don’t know if the items were approved but most agenda items are.

Opt out of some web advertising

August 30, 2015

For those of you who are annoyed by the advertising that seems to be customized for your viewing on your web browser, you might want to opt out.

Follow this url:  http://www.digitaladvertisingalliance.org/

At the bottom right of the main screen there is an option to opt out.

It appears that the process is specific to each browser on each machine that you use, so you may have to do this more than once.

Pick your government

August 29, 2015

Helen Marshall sent us this:

Alice talks to the Cheshire Cat:

“But I don’t want to go among mad people,” Alice remarked.

“Oh, you can’t help that,” said the Cat: “we’re all mad here.  I’m mad.  You’re mad.”

“How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice.

“You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.”

Electricity rates

August 25, 2015

elchuqueno.com published an interesting piece, Step Right Up , the other day about our electricity rates in El Paso.

It seems that our area is one of the few  in Texas that is not deregulated.  The article gives a long list of events that will have to happen before we can have deregulated electricity.

Is this because we are so geographically isolated or are other forces at work here?

We deserve better

I good friend sent a press release in with the hope that some of you would read it and attend the event.

I did not read the whole accompanying note when I got it and I missed the then future event.

It is still a story worth telling.  Local people helping local people.

No government involvement.  Imagine.
