Dwindling Times

Talking with M. T. Cicero the other day we discussed a view about what some of the Times’ problem is.

With the ready availability of national and international news on an instant basis through electronic sources, local newspapers have lost part of what made them desirable to their readers.  By the time the daily newspaper comes out many of us have already heard about the out of town issues.

That leaves the Times with the ability to publish local content in a more in-depth manner than the television and radio stations, thus offering their readers something that they cannot get elsewhere.

Unfortunately the Times has chosen to literally sell itself to our local governments and the power group behind the scenes.  No wonder they have nothing to fill their newspaper.

All we get is coverage of publicity pieces prepared by their masters with little to no investigative reporting.

We deserve better

  1. Or, to put it another way, the Times (just like most print media) has forgotten that it was journalism that got them started, and it is still journalism where they have their biggest responsibility. Instead, they have become to beholden to their advertisers and they’ve forgotten that their primary role is not to satisfy those advertisers, but to inform the public.

Articles you will never see in the El Paso Times: Real cost of the Baseball Stadium, Analysis of Joyce Wilson’s years as City Manager, Articles about Tire Safety or anything bad about tires, or automobiles, or local auto dealers, or local realtors…Leave that to El Diario who still seems to know what journalism is.

Is this what the Times should be reporting? Note how the rest of the country views El Paso.

How can you complain about a lack of local coverage? Today’s Sunday edition included a lengthy column about the tailgate brawl at the UTEP/Tech game. In addition to being a waste of space, it took the columnist a full week to come up with what he thinks passes as humor.
