We now have an EPISD trustee leaving her job to take a new job working for our congresswoman elect.
According to an article in the Times the decision was a difficult one for her:
- “This decision was made less difficult however by the increasing challenge that I have had getting questions answered and concerns addressed,” Byrd writes. “This lack of access to information has made it harder for me to effectively advocate for and communicate to my constituents.”
Really? She had to work hard to do her job. To me that is not a valid reason to consider quitting.
Reality
The end result is that she got a job that pays. Let someone else fend for the children, their parents and the taxpayers even though she committed to do the job.
At this point we don’t know how much she will be paid but that information will be publicly available next year.
It appears that this gives the board of trustees the ability to choose her replacement, probably guaranteeing another vote for whatever they want to do.
We deserve better
Brutus
Suzie Byrd was a supporter of Veronica Escobar, which put her at odds with the Margo-run BOT who supported her opponent. She did indeed call the BOT out on many occasions when there was a lack of transparency (which duplicated the same lack we see on City council). The BOT quickly regressed to Garcia and pre-Garcia times whereby they did things out the public eye, and then announced their decisions. It isn’t so much about watching out for the students but trying to figure out what to watch out for, a task made impossible when administration hems and haws, lies and misleads. She now knows how teachers feel in the District. We used to call it the mushroom syndrome-kept in the dark and fed BS. She did ask for the Superintendent’s resignation, righteously. The answer was retaliation by the Board and Superintendent against her. So she left. Now the board can appoint a rubber stamp to take her place.

It now makes sense as to why Susie was pushing the vote back on school closures until January.

Schools will be closed, those and probably 8 others.

They need to close at least 8. They cannot continue to run half empty schools.

I’m sad she’s leaving; she was one of the few voices of reason. Now we only have Al Velarde to try to assist us.
BOT’s are not paid, and have ridiculous amounts of work to do. They attend numerous committee meetings and drown in voluminous paperwork that we hope ALL of them read do they have the knowledge to vote. JC ( superintendent’s moniker, since he thinks he’s the Second Coming), has sadly trained most of the BOT to think that they work for him, rather than the other way around.
We truly miss her already. My Union, EPTA could always count on a fair and quick response. Don’t know that it will happen now.

Unions are not allowed in Texas. I think you mean teacher association.

Yes, unions are legal here in the Lone Star State, and we have plenty of them in the private sector, and many bargain collectively for employment contracts. Yes, it’s also true that Texas is a “right-to-work” state, meaning it is illegal to make union membership compulsory for employment.

EPTA: El Paso Teachers Association?

A union organization isn’t required to use the word “union” in its name. National Education Association is also a union and professional organization.

Really? Do you really think Susie Bird works for free? Are you trying to sugar coat greed and corruption in El Taxo? Sorry, I don’t buy your story!

Velarde is a limited voice of reason. He’s gunning to be Board President, so he won’t rock the boat.

Suzie Byrd just another El Taxo politician looking for that next “Chair, office”, a career, PROFESSIONAL politician, nothing more. Just another one that SOLD-OUT the taxpayers, on the Clown Council for THEIR multi-million$$$ ball field. She does, has done NOTHING for the PEOPLE of El Taxo. EPISD is just one big money toilet, the NEXT tax INCREASE. So yes, it’s appropriate that she “Works” for Veronica Escobar, the “Replacement” for Beto O’Rourke. Nothing ever gets better for the PEOPLE of El Taxo. Just the politicians.

The congressional race was a choice between a career politician and a charlatan. That’s a sad, disgusting state of affairs. We deserve better candidates. It’s time for Brutus to drag his ass off the porch and get in the dogfight.
