Unnecessary hospital building

March 3, 2018

One of the arguments against the construction of a special building costing $120 million for the children’s hospital has not appeared in our local blogs as far as I can tell.

There is little special advantage that rooms in the children’s hospital offer compared to rooms in a regular hospital.  The real contribution the children’s hospital brings is the addition of physicians and other staff that specialize in the treatment of pediatric problems.

If the voters decided that they had need for better medical treatment of children, doctors and staff could have been hired and could have operated out of the existing hospital.  Yes, they might have had to add special treatment rooms and more beds, but we did not need a whole new hospital.

Mailing my ballot

February 20, 2018

In Vote by mail I promised to get back to you after I sent in a form that the state democrat’s executive committee sent me.

Yesterday I received an envelope with five documents and two return envelopes.

There were a lot of rules and admonitions.

Ultimately it came down to filling out the ballot, placing it in a ballot envelope, then placing the ballot envelope in a carrier envelope, and then signing my name on the carrier envelope.

I suppose that when they receive it they will look at the carrier envelope and my signature and mark the voter rolls to show that I have voted.  They will then probably open the carrier envelope, extract the ballot envelope, open the ballot envelope, extract the ballot and send the ballot on to be counted.

Vote by mail

January 29, 2018

The State Democratic Executive Committee send me an expensive mailer that was designed to get me to request a ballot by mail.

They clearly want more people to vote.

The mailer included a pre-addressed envelope made out to our county voting clerk and requested a ballot by mail for all elections in 2018.

I mailed in the request.

Stay tuned.

Still don’t know about the children’s hospital financial situation

January 22, 2018

Following up on Children’s hospital fate being discussed, a loyal reader got the folks over at the county hospital to post the video of the December 12, 2017 board meeting.

At the November board meeting there was an item that allowed the children’s hospital new chief executive to make a presentation to the board explaining the children’s hospital financial situation.

That presentation was postponed to the December meeting in order to give the new chief executive a little time to become more familiar with the situation at the children’s hospital.

Unfortunately at the December meeting the topic was moved to the consent agenda and her report was accepted without discussion.

So we still don’t know what is going on.

SXSW–do we get anything by being there?

January 18, 2018

We learned the other day that county commissioners and city council have agreed to each spend $50,000 of our money to send a delegation to South by Southwest.

The wikipedia article about South by Southwest reads:

South by Southwest (abbreviated as SXSW and colloquially referred to as South By) is an annual conglomerate of film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences that take place in mid-March in Austin, Texas, United States. It began in 1987, and has continued to grow in both scope and size every year. In 2017, the conference lasted for 10 days with SXSW interactive lasting for five days, music for seven days and film running concurrently for nine days. Comedy and gaming components to the festival are particularly fast-growing.

The city and the county evidently feel that our attendance will be good for the community.  Maybe it will.

The city and county attended last year.

Did our community get any positive benefit from their attendance last year or is this really an opportunity for our employees to have a party?
