Why is it that no one down at the city is trying to help us with the multiple traffic messes we are enduring?

People are dying.

People are facing unbelievable daily delays in their commute.

Some will say that our city officials have no authority over state projects.  That may be true, but our city officials do have a giant soapbox that they should use.

It appears that they did recently authorize the mayor to ask the state to lower the speed limit on I-10.

That is at least something.

Why don’t they ask the state to perform the construction in a less disruptive manner?

If you have an idea, bring it forward please.

Community College failure

It appears that the El Paso Community College District may be  violating a state law relating to the posting of meeting materials.

Sec. 551.1282. GOVERNING BOARD OF JUNIOR COLLEGE DISTRICT: INTERNET POSTING OF MEETING MATERIALS AND BROADCAST OF OPEN MEETING.

(a) This section applies only to the governing board of a junior college district with a total student enrollment of more than 20,000 in any semester of the preceding academic year.

(b) A governing board to which this section applies, for any regularly scheduled meeting of the governing board for which notice is required under this chapter, shall:

(1) post as early as practicable in advance of the meeting on the Internet website of the district any written agenda and related supplemental written materials provided by the district to the board members for the members’ use during the meeting;

If you go to their website you will see that they post their agendas but do not post any backup material.

Slow down, save a life

Well.

It seems that the city is finally going to try to do something about the death trap known as I-10 here in El Paso.

Item 28.1 on the Tuesday, July 14, 2016 city council agenda reads:

Discussion and action to authorize the Mayor to request from the Texas Transportation Commission a reduction of the speed limit on Interstate 10 due to increased collisions during the recent construction period.

According to the backup material the police department reports that during the period April 1, 2015 to June 20, 2016 there were 359 accidents, 76 reported injuries, and 4 deaths on the stretch between Redd Road and Porfirio Diaz.

Maybe slowing traffic down will help mitigate the problem.  We have all noticed the increase in aggressive driving recently.

One more time?

We are supposed to be getting a new county hospital administrator any day now.

Item 19 on the June 14, 2016 board agenda read:

 Discuss and take appropriate action regarding the 2016 Performance  and Objectives of Mr. James N. Valenti, President and Chief  Executive officer of the EI Paso county Hospital District pursuant to Texas Government Code $551.074.

The minutes have not been posted but the video just came out.

Incredibly when the agenda item was brought up for consideration in open session (after executive session) there was a motion and a second to approve an action.  The item passed unanimously.

There was absolutely no public discussion.  This is a clear violation of the Texas Open Meetings Act.  Now we will have to wait to read the minutes of the meeting.

Any predictions?

Let’s keep our independence
