Displaying the American flag

June 5, 2018

I enjoyed driving through neighborhoods on Memorial Day and seeing the American flags.

The Kiwanis Clubs of El Paso Foundation is responsible for placing several hundred of them each Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day.

They partner with local scout troops and youth groups, giving most of the money to them and thus helping them both to instill a sense of responsibility in the kids and to raise money for their organization.

The Kiwanis have a web page that explains the program:  http://elpasokiwanisflags.org/index.html

We wrote about them back in 2015 in this post.  Since then Mr. Hendrix has done a great job of expanding the program.

This is better

Expanding faster than the galaxy

Why is the city working so hard to finance urban sprawl?

We learned the other day that EPISD has decided to close underpopulated  schools in order to save money.

Evidently they have around 30 schools that are running at 65% of capacity or below.  According to the EPISD website they have 94 schools.  That means that nearly 30% of their schools are one-third empty.

Wouldn’t encouraging infill projects help us fill the schools and reduce the need for additional roads, utilities, fire stations and all of the other things that the city does.

Won’t the school district end up having to build new schools to serve the new areas?  Won’t that cost us even more money?

We deserve better

Wastewater, wastemoney

According to a recent article in the El Paso Times the tax increment finance zone “only will exist until the year 2036 or until the cost to build stormwater infrastructure has been met.”

Evidently they can’t build the resort they want because of drainage problems off of the mountain.

Imagine that.

Many of us would just say build it somewhere else if you have to build it.

We deserve better

Credit where credit is due

The Hunt Family Foundation recently published their 2017 annual report in the Times.

Without regard to how we might feel about the financing of the ballpark we should note that the Hunts are supporting charities in our area.

In 2017 they show contributions to charities of $7.5 million.

They have committed another $55.8 million to projects that they will fund over a period of time.

In total they have funded or committed $97.1 million since 1987.
